U5: Architecture as Technique

Architecture, in general, depends on materials and technology.

We have two different types of materials;

Traditional materials:

  • Stone
  • Earth
  • Bricks
  • Wood

Modern materials:

  • Steel
  • Concrete
  • Glass

Technology:

One of the most fascinating emerging technologies for architects is 3D printing. It has the ability to drastically alter the way they operate and enable the construction of large buildings in a matter of hours. Although 3D printing technology has been known for a while, it hasn’t yet been sufficiently accurate and economical to be employed in architectural projects.

In addition, virtual reality is quickly developing and growing in popularity among architects. They can use it to make a digital model of a structure and then “walk through” it to get a sense of how it seems and feels from within. This can be helpful for marketing and determining whether design concepts are feasible.

Also, AI offers various options for architects. Using it, for instance, to facilitate the design process AI can be utilized to come up with fresh design concepts for structures or to assist in making material and finish decisions. AI may also be used to conduct building inspections and identify issues.

New challenges:

  1. Stability and instability as formal aesthetic principles. Extreme cantilevers.(A cantilever is a protruding volume or beam attached to a structure at only one end.)
  2. Structure dissolution with new materials and structural types. Dematerialization.

Facilities:

A facility management plan ensures that the needs of the people who occupy the buildings are met. The advantages include increasing the facility’s lifespan and the long-term cost savings offered by a well-maintained structure.

  • Energy networks:
    • Electrical installation  • Gas installation
    • Photovoltaic system
  • Hydraulicfacilities
    • Potable water supply
    • Sanitation facility
    • Fire protection systems
  • Climaticinstallations  • Ventilation
    • Heating
    • Air-conditioning • Domestic hot water
  • Telecommunications
    • Phone signal
    • TV signal
    • Fiberglass internet network  • Home automation • Safety control
