U2: The current architect?

Definitions:

The architect is who:

  • who projects and develops a construction
  • an artist, a creator
  • one with sufficient capacity to shape the spaces, taking into account human needs, economic and functional parameters
  • who provides beauty to what surrounds us
  • who can see what people need to materialize it in real life

Training:

Learning to see: (photograph, read to deepen ideas, watch films, draw frequently, analyze surroundings, travel..).

Learning to think: (find the language and be critical).

Learning to create and understand: (the materials, compositional rules, construction techniques, needs of the users).

Tips:

Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous architect, gave us young architects some tips:

  • Do not take architecture for a living unless you love it and are willing to be faithful to it.
  • Thinking about the WHY of things
  • Learn to distinguish the curious from the beautiful
  • Get used to the analysis
  • Think “simple”
  • Take the time to prepare yourself…

The profession:

The profession of architect is regulated by the “ley 38/1999 05/11, de ordenación de la edificacion ” It regulates the building process, defines the agents that intervene in it, establishes obligations and responsibilities, guarantees the users to ensure quality through compliance with the basic requirements of the buildings.

A common form of employment:

  • Own office (self-employed)
  • Work for others: for other architects and/or companies ( public work )

People mistakenly believe that all architects do is plan and draw, but many steps must come before that. Based solely on what I have learned this semester in all my subjects, I can conclude that architecture is a vast field and that architects spend a lot of time-solving problems that are typically not directly related to architecture.
