Step 1: Meet an architect:

Luis Barragán

Luis Barragán

The architect I have chosen is a Mexican architect called Luis Barragán, he was also an engineer who won the Pritzker Prize in 1980. His work is often quoted about minimalist architecture despite the use of color due to the architectural ideas of forms and spaces which Barragán pioneered.

The work of Barragán has been categorized as “minimalist” architecture and “maximalist” in terms of color. Although Barragan’s works exhibit intensive attention to sharp lines, vivid colors, stunning textures, and the fun idea of water, minimalism typically does not forbid exuberant hues. The planes could be made of stucco, adobe, wood, or occasionally even water interacting with the natural environment.

In the book “Contemporary Architects,” Barragán—who identified as a landscape architect—wrote that architects should design gardens to be used in the same way that they design houses in order to foster a sense of beauty and an appreciation for the fine arts when the home should not be a “machine for living.”

One of his famous quotes is:

Any work of architecture that does not express serenity is a mistake.

Barragan’s creations ranged well beyond simple structures with eye-catching colors and textures. His interventions involved dealing with people’s feelings. His interior design brought warmth, serenity, beauty, inspiration, enchantment, intimacy, and wonder into the environments he built.

My belief is that Luis Barragan concentrated on creating settings for his projects that inspire tranquility and peace and that help people achieve a positive state of mind.

Step 2: Reflexion from the text:

The book “Quiero ser arquitecto” is basically written to make youths and people, in general, admire the profession of an architect, Alberto Campo Baeza has described the architect as a creative person, a thinker, and a builder. He has given a lot of advice and tips for future architects, as well as some recommendations of universities where they can get the best education, such as the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

He also mentioned the most important subjects that an architecture student won’t escape, such as projects and structures… Not to mention the basics that a person should have or at least practice before studying this career, like drawing, photographing, analyzing, noting everything, and reading for a better cultural knowledge

In my opinion, even understanding how challenging it may be to stay in the field, architecture is one of the most interesting jobs. As the author noted, even after completing the coursework, architectural studies require a lot of effort, commitment, and hard work. Alberto began talking about how being an architect is a fantastic job that will enable you to realize your ambitions, which piqued my interest in the field even more.
