Geographic location
The Kasbah is located on a hill in the urban center of the city of Ouarzazate. This building occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of old caravan passages, at the confluence of two main rivers: Assif Dadès and Assif Idermi (oued ouarzazate).
Historical overview
Brief description
The kasbah’s original design has been completely altered. The reception room, which was constructed in an urban style, the courtyard, and the embellishments on the facades are some of the few remaining components that attest to the magnificence of this building. The only remnant of the towers, stables, ovens, meandering lanes, and family rooms is in the minds of the ancients.
Currently, the kasbah is divided into four sections: the southeast section is home to the Center for the Conservation and Rehabilitation of Atlas and Subatlasic Architectural Heritage; the northeast section was restored in 1996 and is accessible to tourists; the eastern section, known as “Stara,” is inhabited; and the center section is in ruins.
The site and the kasbah of Taourirt are classified by the vizirial decree of February 17, 1954 (B.O n° 2159 of March 12, 1954, p.379).
